Turns out that Nintendo really did have a Direct to show us and I thought it was pretty good. I honestly didn’t think much of it at the time because I’m fine I guess. There was nothing I really needed from Nintendo at the moment plus I wasn’t convinced there was going to be a direct. I woke up to see that they did in fact drop one and I tempered my expectations because I know how great Nintendo can be but I’m fully aware of how terrible they can be. Like the WiiU…almost everything about that console just didn’t really work out well. That being said, I honestly went in to the direct pretty neutral and left pleasantly surprised.
They off the bat started out with The World Ends With You remake that has new content. I don’t know if you’re aware, but that game was so good on DS and a personal favorite of mine. So immediately they had my attention. Then they showed some stuff I didn’t really care about until I saw the new Mario Tennis. I was really conflicted…I love Mario Tennis 64, Mario Power Tennis, Mario Tennis on Gameboy Color and Mario Tennis Power Tour. But the latest installments ESPECIALLY the one on WiiU and 3DS are fucking dog shit. Pure, goddamned, absolute TRASH. And I see some of the gameplay changes they made to the overall series but I also see some old school greatness. The game looks fantastic, there’s a story mode, I like the costumes, the courts are actually different and it’s something I’ll keep my eye on. I want it to be good; Strikers, Golf, Tennis and Mario Sluggers are fun.
Not really a huge SNK fan but SNK Heroines Tag Team Frenzy looks like some virgin, basement dweller pandering fighter with waifus. So naturally I’ll be purchasing it though I do want to see more. I have already dedicated this year to fighting games. Fe looks really good, it’s giving me Ori and the Blind Forest vibes but like 3D. I’m a huge fan of how Celeste looks, I’m definitely going to look into and probably buy it because man I love these Switch Nindies. Quick story, the HDMI outport on my WiiU broke in 2016 and I never bothered to fix it. I love Donkey Kong Country games, even the Wii version was dope, my brother and I beat that together. So I never got a chance to play Tropical Freeze and I’m definitely going to grab that and play them. Dark Souls isn’t something I’m interesting in but maybe I’ll try it out.
So I really don’t have much more to say about all of this, it was good, nothing superb but it wasn’t bad at all. Some new games, dlc etc, overall I’d give it a 7. I do like this format of just showing a bunch of games in quick succession without dialogue or interruptions.
